My dad- Miscellaneous finds, memories and drawings

More about my dad-William J. Maturo

One of the few things that made it over the years were my dad's dog tags from World War II.

They had his name, his army serial number and his mom's name and address.  She always went by Dorothy even though her name was actually Emily.

My dad, William J Maturo was a character.  He always loved to make us laugh.

He loved to make faces and his favorite we called his bubble face.

He used to love to draw little pictures with his bubble face character.  I had a few left over the years.

He was in the hospital many times growing up.

______________________________________________________________________________________

In all our pictures, I found this letter that my dad wrote to my mother when he was in the hospital the first time.

Another memory was the stories he would tell to my brother, sister and me when I was little.  There was an old house on Jones Hill Road in West Haven near Hubbard's farm known as the Warner house.  It looked haunted.   My dad used to tell us stories that the man living there turned into the bumpy monster at night.  My dad was a joker and was having some fun.    My brother used to hide in his closet with a blanket and my sister used to tell me it was bumpy monster coming to get us...

What's in a name... Maturo!

Maturo Name Meaning

Italian: nickname from maturo ‘mature’, ‘middle aged’, possibly denoting someone who was mature beyond his years.

Some interesting things that I found looking up my family name:  There are many companies and people with the name Maturo,  but I was looking for different things... Here are some of the fun things I found with Maturo.

Where the Maturo's are in the world........

According to 3 charts I found on the Maturo name, the USA has more Maturo's and CT has more Maturo's.  Kind of interesting!

There is a MATURO WINE:  I will have to find and try it!

Maturo - Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2019

Montepulciano is widely planted throughout Central and Southern Italy, but it’s the mountainous region of Abruzzo where it reaches its peak. This region is so cool that making red wine is not possible every year. But when the grapes do ripen, there is no better expression of Montepulciano anywhere.

On Spotify, there is MATURO Music

Finding my Italian family-Our travels-Part 4

My travel memories with my cousins continued.....

We saw more sites in Rome too nice not to mention.  The Trevi Fountain was beautiful.  We all made a wish by throwing coins into the fountain which has become a ritual to tourists who come from all over the world.

There are actually two superstitious legends to explain why people are obsessed with throwing coins:  the first says that if you throw a coin from your right hand backwards over your left shoulder, you will definitely return to Rome. The second legend inspired the film "Three Coins in the Trevi Fountain", which says you must throw three coins into the fountain: the first guarantees your return to Rome, the second leads to a new romance, while the third will lead to marriage.

We also got to see the Spanish Steps in Rome, sit on the famous steps and rest for a little while.   The Spanish Steps are a set of 135 steps in climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinita dei Monti church at the top.

We went to Florence and saw many sites around the city.  We also went to Sorrento and the Amalfi coast which were spectacular.

We went to our cousin "F" and "G"'s 2nd home in Milan and had dinner.  From their window we could see the Swiss Alps.   My one memory that day that sticks in my mind is they brought out a huge bowl of pasta with sauce.  We graciously ate the pasta and when they asked if anyone wanted more,  "C" said yes and had another bowl.  They waited for him to finish.
The one thing we didn't know was it was only the first course!.. After that they came out with chicken and meatballs and more.

Another memory I have,  is the gathering we had of all the cousins including some cousins that lived in Switzerland and came over to join us.  We met up and went to an outdoor restaurant overlooking a lake and had a wonderful dinner.

I met all my 2nd cousins except one "R" and everyone said I resembled her the most.  Someday I hope to meet her.

I want to go back to Italy someday and see my family again.  I've also met more cousins with the help of Facebook.  I also belong to two "Maturo" groups on Facebook.  Someday I hope to connect all the Maturo's around the world.
